Areas Where Motorola Has Made Noticeable Improvements

Motorola has made significant improvements across multiple areas to truly upgrade the Razr Plus 2024 over the 2023 model.

  • Firstly, the processor has been upgraded to the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3, a substantial improvement over the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. This results in better overall speed and stability. For those interested in numbers, the average AnTuTu score for the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 was 1,100,000, whereas it is 1,500,000 for the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3. However, it would have been excellent if Motorola had opted for the flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, considering it’s a flagship foldable device.
  • The upgraded CPU also includes an improved GPU. The Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 comes with the Adreno 735, which is more capable of handling modern games compared to the Adreno 730 on the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1.
  • The main screen now features an LTPO AMOLED panel, adjusting its refresh rate as needed to conserve battery. It also boasts a peak brightness of 3000 nits.
  • The secondary display is now larger and supports higher refresh rate, Dolby Vision, and increased peak brightness.
  • The cameras have been upgraded to 50MP on both sensors. While the cameras on the Razr Plus 2023 were just decent, Motorola has hopefully not only improved the camera sensors but also the image processing to enhance image quality further. However, the front camera remains similar to last year’s model.
  • 15W wireless charging and 5W reverse charging are great additions.
  • Some improvements include upgraded storage to UFS 4.0, along with Bluetooth codec support for aptX HD and aptX Lossless.
  • The launch price for the Razr Plus 2023 remains unchanged from last year’s launch price of $999. While $999 is a significant amount, it’s commendable that the company chose not to raise the price.

Areas Where Motorola Could Have Improved

  • Removing the ultrawide camera is a significant letdown, especially for a flagship device. While a 50MP 2X camera is good, retaining the ultrawide lens is crucial, as its absence will be a deal-breaker for many.
  • While the battery capacity has been increased to 4000 mAh from 3800 mAh, the upgrade isn’t significant. The battery life of the Razr Plus 2023 was above average, and we anticipate similar endurance from the 2024 model, despite packing more power and other power-hungry components like the display.
  • While the IPX8 rating is great for water resistance, allowing the phone to be submerged for up to 30 minutes, it does not protect against dust particles. Therefore, caution is advised.

Our Thoughts

Motorola has made upgrades in almost every department with the Razr Plus 2024, making it a significant improvement over the Razr Plus 2023.

You can expect enhanced everyday performance and overall refinements.

One of the most anticipated upgrades is in the cameras, not only because of larger sensors but also due to reported improvements in image quality across Motorola’s mid-range phones. Sources from multiple countries suggest Motorola has made substantial enhancements to their camera technology for 2024.

Therefore, we hope Motorola has improved camera quality, as this is a top priority for many users.

While the company’s focus on camera improvements is commendable, enhancing battery life would have made the Razr Plus 2024 an even more compelling option, given the importance of good battery endurance to many users.

We really wish Motorola had opted for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 instead of the 8s Gen 3. However, the 8s Gen 3 is still a capable CPU by all means.

Considering these factors, the Motorola Razr Plus 2024 is a smartphone worth considering, especially for enthusiasts of flip phones.

Motorola has also launched the standard Razr 50 at a lower price. You can check its specs to see what it offers.

So, what are your thoughts on the Razr Plus 2024? Do you believe it represents a significant upgrade over last year’s Razr 2023 model? Please share your thoughts with us.
